oh boy/girl.

well i went to massachusetts over the weekend to visit emilia who was home from san diego and on sunday when the sun finally cooperated we all packed in the car (with yummy pasta salad leftovers from the garden party the night before!) and went to the lake. what did we find along the way?? nothing more than a tranny ice cream statue wearing peter pan slippers of course!! i really wanted to take a picture, but with my camera being cranky i was reduced to googling so i could share...oh the beauty of flickr!! i found a great picture and comic expressing exactly the sentiment felt in the car - was that a girl in a top hat OR a boy wearing make-up?!?!?!? sweet. more to come this week from my trip, my garden AND the highlights found in my google reader that had 178 posts waiting for me after being gone 48 hours.

the boston celtics have not won a championship since i was 6 years old and while i may have strayed over the years for the michael jordan's and dennis rodman's and kobe bryant's (yes at one time, i did!) of the game, i have always been a true celtic fan at heart. i grew up watching the celtics with my dad and grandfather and brother - knowing the names, the legends, the legacy of the garden. when i was 8 i met robert parish at a card signing and i asked him to stand up so i could see how tall he was, to a girl who grew up to 6 feet tall, he is still a towering giant in my mind. the best part though was that the serious, stoic parish was wearing 3 stooges suspenders with his suit. i am so proud of the celtics and their championship win, celtics in six - GO GREEN!

the first native strawberries are coming into season here in maine and last night my mom brought some home from a local farm. when my dad asked her how much they were, she just said, "you don't want to know, just enjoy them." it made me very excited because this morning i got up and put the scarlet beauties atop my cereal, this - along with a glass of concord grape juice - makes up my favorite summer breakfast (until local blueberries come into season!). good things come in small green boxes.

bocce baby.

"summer afternoon - summer afternoon... the two
most beautiful words in the english language."
henry james (1843 - 1916)

my mom bought us a bocce set for the house last week and on friday we opened it up to find - NO instructions!! it was only like 10 bucks on sale, but still - a note with directions would have been appropriate. so i googled the rules, but not before we decided to just play for fun on the front lawn with the kids. i remember that when i was in college a group of guy friends chipped in and bought a proper (read: not-plastic-from-target) bocce set and once they had mastered the regular game they made up "extreme bocce". i was mostly an extreme cheerleader, but it was A LOT of fun to play & watch. maybe i can use my silly set for some extreme entertainment over the summer:)

if it's sunday.

"florida! florida! florida!"
-tim russert, 1950 - 2008

i am deeply saddened tonight at the shocking news that tim russert of meet the press, passed away earlier today, he was only 58. i mostly try to keep my politics out of this space, but if you know me well you would know that i love politics - obsessively sometimes - watching and analyzing. and on sunday mornings i have shows...meet the press, chris matthews and face the nation..i set my alarm to get up at 9am with tim - hungover, sleepy, cranky - i get up and watch it. if i miss the 9am show, i know that it replays at 6pm on msnbc...it's an addiction. so while i wonder what i will be doing at 9am on sunday this father's day, i send out thoughts of love and respect in memory of tim russert - go buffalo!

dress up.

"clothes make the man. naked people have little or no influence on society."
— mark twain

my friend jamie and his special gal jen are getting married on the 21st and while i contemplate what to wear and how to accessorize, i mostly think that if i had $295 spare bucks i would splurge on the jillian dress from j. crew in classic navy and call it a day...yellow shoes optional!

old is new.

i just love a throw back to the past and this new song by solange (beyonce's younger sis) is so fun, i could play it all day long on a loop. i have always had the love for new old sounds, like when lauryn hill came out with doo wop (that thing) and more recently amy winehouse's back to black album...i just hope for solange that she doesn't turn into a cuckoo bird or a crack head - cheers!

p.s. this video is pretty cool, but i'm not exactly (or even minorly) sure what it has to do with the song. that's A LOT of political and historical content for one summer hit...

***UPDATE - so the video i posted was whack and until i can find a new one, you can find it here...sorry!

she's a maniac.

“some people wear their heart up on their sleeve. i wear mine underneath my right pant leg, strapped to my boot.” - ani difranco

i would very much like to wear these while sporting a wide-mouthed-cut-off vintage grey sweatshirt...think flashdance, but more fancy than a steel mill. although i would tape my feet and go barefoot rather than do the high heel thing, these lace-up legwarmers from year of the goat are corset meets knit heaven. j'like (this is me & dw's version of j'adore...our silly american version!). also - for those motivated folks out there - the pattern to make these yo'self is also available.
